Spirit History Of Black Superheroes 1

Ebony White – Racially Inspired Sidekick To Spirit

Published By Quality Comics.
Written By Will Eisner
Cover Art by Reed Crandall.

The Spirit originally was based in New York City, but this was quickly changed to the fictional Central City.

Funding his adventures with an inheritance from his late father, Denny Colt aka The Spirit and Ebony White set off on wild adventures around the globe.

Eisner later received heavy criticism for his racist depictions of Ebony White – namely his facial features & thick lips.

His depictions helped sensationalize the racial blackface culture which cruelly depicted African Americans in unsavory caricatures circulated throughout the “Jim Crow Era”.
